Greek learning resources

Greek FlashcardsHaving just started teaching Greek 1 at Moore College, I thought it would be good to provide an up-to-date list of the most relevant Greek resources available on this site:

Morphology

Principles of morphology: Greek Morphology (PDF)

A concise (11 A4 pages) tabular summary of everything that needs to be memorised for first year Greek morphology (ie the ‘shape’ of the language) at Moore Theological College. It is intended for those who want to keep memorisation to a minimum and work things out from first principles.

Morphology course with exercises: Feeling Greek (PDF)

This course is designed as a simple, phonics-based introduction to New Testament Greek. It can be used as a ‘refresher’ for students of Greek who have found themselves struggling with the complexities of the language at an advanced level and need to remind themselves of the basics; or as a basic-level introduction for new students of the language who appreciate learning a few simple rules with intensive ‘drills’ rather than extensive amounts of miscellaneous information.

At this stage, I have only completed the first 10 chapters – enough to give you a complete foundation in morphology and to begin applying this to nouns, etc.

Vocabulary

Back in 2002, I developed my own Microsoft Excel-based flashcard program. This has now been made largely redundant by other flashcard programs for various platforms. Here’s a list of the ones I currently know about:

Memrise

Memrise is a popular memory tool that seeks to apply developments in brain science in a fun way to assist learning. It’s flexible and social. There’s a Moore College first year Greek package available. Available via desktop browsers + apps for iOS, Android and Amazon.

Anki

Anki is a tool you can use to remember Greek vocab. It employs “intelligent repetition” – it presents you with items of vocab piece by piece, and remembers your results so it can customise future sessions. There’s a Moore College a vocab list that plugs directly into Anki, so you can use it straight away with minimum setup required. Available for Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android; plus there is a web version.

Remata

Eric Miller has optimised and upgraded my initial Greek vocab spreadsheet to work on a number of platforms. Remata is freely available for download.

Prepositions
