Give away your excess money to help pregnant women and their unborn children

Please consider taking part in this very worthy cause.

From within the student body of Moore College, a plan has emerged to express care for the poor of the earth ‐ in this case, the unborn and their mothers. On December 8th 2008, all families who receive Family Tax Benefit A will be given $1000 per child in order to ‘boost the economy’. It is proposed that half of this ‘free money’ be used ‘for new lives’ with the view to achieving three goals (via Anglicare):

To support and grow an Anglicare safe‐house and support program

To support an independent women’s think tank that advocates life affirming, pro‐woman alternatives to abortion.

To produce a high quality TV‐style ad campaign showcasing interviews with women who have had abortions and who want to speak out.

Review of N.T.Wright's Scripture and the Authority of God

Last week Stand Firm (a website promoting traditional Anglicanism in America) drew their readers' attention to Bishop Tom Wright's address to the Lambeth conference, "The Bible and Tomorrow's World", where Wright summarised his main argument from his 2006 book, Scripture and the Authority of God.

In response, they've republished my review of the book (I originally wrote the review for The Briefing magazine in early 2006).

Word Works Conference - John's Gospel

On July 11-12 I had the privilege of speaking at the second Malaysian Word Works conference, in a hotel in Sepang, just outside Kuala Lumpur. The Word Works conference is an activity of the Malaysia Gospel Growth Fellowship (GGF), which is a fellowship committed to glorifying God through the growth of Gospel-centred evangelical Christianity in the local church in Malaysia.

Word Works is one of the activities of the GGF. It’s a 2- day event designed to help everyday Christians learn how to read the Bible better, especially in its different genres and styles of writing. The two days were certainly jam-packed (6 x one hour lectures, 4 Bible studies, a sermon and 2 question times!) but the ~40 conference participants were very keen. By the end of the two days they had a firmer grasp of how to read John’s Gospel for themselves. Even better: many felt that they were equipped to go back to their churches and share the Bible with others.

You can download the lectures, Q&A times and sample sermon here:

What is John's Gospel?

Lecture 1

What is John's Gospel For?

Lecture 2

The Revelation of the Glory of the Father through the Son (and the Spirit)

Lecture 3

Sample Sermon: Truly Alive (John 11)

Sample Sermon

John's Gospel: Question and Answer Session 1

Question & Answer 1

Rejection of Jesus by Israel

Lecture 4

The Glory of the Cross

Lecture 5

Having Life in His Name

Lecture 6

Question and Answer Session 2

Question & Answer 2

Please pray for the Malaysia Gospel Growth Fellowship. It is a fledgling group, but because of the deep theological maturity and commitment of its members, it has great potential to make a lasting impact for the gospel in Malaysia. Malaysia is a majority Muslim nation, which can make life a little difficult for Christians; nevertheless there is relative freedom amongst the Christians to proclaim the gospel and build up the saints, and there’s a lot of work to do in this regard! The GGF is also looking for financial support to train ministry apprentices and grow their conferences (they also run a Thinking Theologically conference, a Fellow Workers ministry conference, and the Moore College Certificate in Theology correspondence course). If you would like more information on becoming a GGF supporter, please contact me.

A Very Special Tent

My good friend and colleague, Ben Pakula, has just released a new Christian children’s music album called A Very Special Tent. And my whole family agrees: this album is totally awesome. The lyrics seem simple on the surface, but they’re a work of art: Ben is able to pack a huge array of fundamental gospel truths into a few catchy and fun verses. But it’s not just the lyrics that are awesome. Ben has a background in heavy metal music, and his musical style pulls no punches. It’s very, very professionally produced; it’s driving, heavy and loud. I’m sure my Year 5-6 public school Scripture class will love it. But even my one and a half year old squeals with delight when she hears the double-kick bass drum and distorted guitar in the song Powerful Love!

The Sola Panel is a group of Reformed-Evangelical friends who love the five 'solas' of the Reformation, and want to promote a Bible-driven passion for theology, holiness and gospel ministry. I strongly encourage you to check it out regularly (of course, I'm biased, being one of the contributors).

A Very Special Tent

Ben Pakula, accomplished Christian children's musician, sings about the biblical theology of the tabernacle. Have a listen - God's holiness, atonement, biblical theology, the divinity of Christ, ecclesiology and eschatology is all taught in a catchy song that my kids want to hear again and again! This is the title track of an excellent album aimed at primary school students called "A Very Special Tent", which will be released in April, 2008. Look at Ben's blog for details about ordering the CD.

Address at the Funeral of C. Lionel Windsor (28 Nov 1916 - 18 Feb 2008)

As far as I can tell, I am now the only remaining Lionel Windsor in Australia, and I am so proud to own the name of my grandfather. Grandpa wanted his funeral to have words of encouragement, words of life. When he died, he owned and cherished the Bible our family gave him on Fathers’ Day, 1988. It was heavily used, read and annotated. Grandpa himself suggested that Psalm 46 should be used in the service, and it is my privilege to speak to you words of encouragement from this Psalm this morning.

CD sample: Knowing Jesus as my Boss (from "A Very Special Tent")

Ben Pakula, an accomplished Christian musician, is about to release an exciting new CD of children's music targeted at upper primary students. I've had a sneak preview at some of the songs - the CD is incredibly fun, original, musically awesome and theologically rich, all at the same time.

The album will be called "A Very Special Tent". Don't miss out on your copy when it's released.

For more information on the album, its release and how to order, go to Ben's blog.

Here's a sample of the first song that will appear on the CD. It's an excellent but simple exposition of the doctrine of justification by faith alone from Philippians 3 - but don't let that mouthful put you off. What it really is is a fantastic song that tells us how to live for Jesus. My kids can't help singing along to it!
